LOCATION
This former British colony is called the Nature Island of the Caribbean. Just 1,400 miles or four hours south of Miami, Florida, the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a tropical haven of exotic birds, beautiful rainforests, secluded beaches and 365 rivers. This island is an escape filled with lush hiking trails, hot springs, waterfalls and freshwater lakes, which is ideal for the adventure seeker and the discerning traveller.
An independent state since 1978, Dominica is a melting pot of ethnicities, most notably native Carib Indians, or Kalinagos. It remains the only Caribbean island where settlements of these pre-Columbus indigenous people still exist. Today, the culture of the Kalinagos, intermingled with that of French and British settlers, are intertwined into the fabric of the island’s inhabitants.
The people, easy-going and amiable, make the island one of the safest and friendliest in the region. In Dominica English is the main language, however, Kwéyòl, a French dialect, is popularly spoken.
